Growing Your Own Food Does More than Save Money

We're all looking for ways to save money in this economic climate - from finding the cheapest electricity supplier to using the car less. Yet saving money doesn't only help your bank balance, it can actually empower you.

It is said that the single most effective act of increasing one's own personal power is to grow your own food. Today, a veritable green/food revolution is slowly building not only across America, but in many parts of the world. It’s people growing more of their own foods by planting a simple garden, or an elaborate garden in their back yards, or wherever they can find a small plot of land with good soil. Ten years ago I planted my first small garden, just 8 by 8 feet. I was astounded by how much food I could grow in such a small space. I had three months worth of potatoes alone. Since then, I have expanded to three large gardens, and now I can grow some 65% of my own food. And it still takes a relatively small amount of space, and just a few hours of work per week. Growing my own food saves me thousands on groceries every year. Even a tiny garden means money in your pocket. It can reduce your grocery bill by $100, $200 a month. Lots of gardening means bigger savings. You can also sell your produce at farmer's market for cash! Furthermore, when you eat freshly grown food of your own tending, you get side benefits, such as a healthier diet that may make you lose weight safely, and also staves off expensive health problems and costly trips to a doctor. Growing more of your own food is one of the most pleasant, healthy, easiest and best ways to save money. Why not plant a garden this summer? You’ll spend less on food, and you’ll have a terrific, fun new hobby!
