How to play more games and levels with action replay

I recently bought a dsi (the other half thinks its for our boy but really I wanted one myself) and have been having lots of fun on a few games but a friend told that I should get action replay for it. Now I had no idea what this action replay was, so I've looked all over the internet for some help but havn't found any yet. My friend said that it is (and bear with me hear, as I'm not great with this sort of thing) something that allows you to enter codes that allow you to access more games and levels within games. I'm not sure if this is right or not, I would have thought the game designers would want you to play all the levels of their game. I have no idea how to connect action replay dsi to computer network and not even sure if thats what I'm meant to do. I think what he meant was you can play maybe a higher difficulty straight off without having to play through the game once to unlock it. Anyway as you can probably tell this isn't my forte and I'm not really sure what it is I'm looking.
